Website editor’s note: If you would like to ask questions of your local government candidates to see where they stand on 5G, below are some suggestions.

A Selection of Questions for Local Government Candidates

Here is a selection of QUESTIONS for political candidates to use on the phone or email out to each candidate or ask at community meetings:

*1/ Are you willing to put forward a Resolution that calls for the Precautionary Principle to be applied to the unsafe untested 5G technology and a Moratorium until independent research is done on the longterm harm to health and environment? (This resolution would be directed to Auckland Council and the NZ government)

2/ How could you ensure that the people of (name relevant area) are informed about the dangers of 5G wireless technology ?

*3/ Do you think it is acceptable for telcos to have unbridled freedom to impose 5G without public consultation? How will you support the community to exercise their democratic rights and freedoms to refuse consent for 5G technology to protect the health and safety of their families?

4/Will you investigate safe alternatives to 5G EMF microwave radiation and recommend technology that does not compromise health and well-being?

*5/Will you encourage (your local) Council to work with central government to establish a 5G Moratorium while independent scientific studies are conducted on adverse cumulative biological effects on people and the environment?

6/ Will you recommend revision of inadequate government standards and regulations on 5G EMF radiation for greater protection of public health and safety?

7/How will you work to stop 5G tech roll out by the telecommunications corporations?

8/ In what way could you use your position of power or influence to prevent this untested 5G technology from being forced on the community?

Results of questions to some Hamilton local government candidates:

Why engage with Local Government on the 5G issue?

The National Environmental Standard for Telecommunications Facilities (NESTF) severely limits local government’s power over a lot of cellular phone infrastructure but local government currently still has some jurisdiction over some wireless infrastructure.

Local government is responsible for urban trees, which are reportedly being cut down in some towns and cities overseas to make way for 5G. (See: https://5g.org.nz/2018/10/06/like-trees-enjoy-breathing-oxygen-you-should-oppose-5g ) Therefore helping to engage with local government candidates to ensure that they are aware of the risks to urban trees from 5G (in addition to other risks posed by 5G, such as the introduction of the IoT and health risks) is important to protect street trees and urban air quality.
